Subject: Swenson's "Principles of Modern Acoustics" From: George Swenson Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2002 09:53:38 -0500 Everybody: I'm glad to hear that my old book "Principles of Modern Acoustics" is now in the Public Domain. I know of no renewal of the copyright and it's been out of print for 35 years, or so. It was only printed once by Van Nostrand, and reprinted once in offset by Boston Technical Publishers. The book still has some unique features which are valuable especially to folks versed in the analytical techniques of electrical engineering. I welcome the effort to make it available again. He's a retired professor here in our department, and he's the one who asked me to look into this matter. He knows a researcher back east who wants the book posted on an educational web site. Swenson is happy to have the book reach new audiences, but wants to make sure we're not infringing on the rights of the copyright holder. It looks like there is no copyright holder, which is great. I'll ask Swenson if he is aware of any renewal of the copyright (I doubt he is). In case you or someone at Thomson wants to communicate with him, his contact info follows. (And I'll copy this message to him.) gswenson@uiuc.edu office: 217-333-4498 home: 217-356-5398 ---Jamie Well, I'm getting closer to concluding that this title is now in the public domain, although this makes me uncomfortable because this means that someone may have failed to renew the copyright in 1981. I checked with our lawyer and he agreed that this is probably the case, though he suggested that we contact the author, if possible. I found two editions of another title by this author (I think) in the Copyright Office database, published in 1985 and 2001: Interferometry and synthesis in radio astronomy / A. Richard Thompson, James M. Moran, George W. Swenson, Jr. Both editions were published by Wiley, so I have contacted Judith Spreitzer again at Wiley and asked her if she can provide an address for George Swenson. Assuming she can, I will give the information to you and you can contact him directly. But if he did not renew this, the book definitely is in the public domain now. Hopefully Judith will get back to me tomorrow. Regards (and thank you for the U of I campus update!) All of it. But it won't be in PDF or text; it'll be scanned to an AT&T image format called DjVu, which readers will have to download before they are able to look at Swenson's book. At least, that's the plan as I understand it. Once I have solid info about the copyright status from you, I'll just forward it to the individual who wants to do this, and let him take it from there. Look forward to hearing back. Thanks for the help. ---jh
